I had the great pleasure of being invited to a local art showing of handmade pieces by Cecile Falvey of Mt. Tambourine, Jenny Jackett of Toowoomba and Evangeline Vanderbyl of Melbourne. Much to my delight the textures, colours and well, the whole collection of these three talented people was pleasing on the eye to say the least.
After looking around at all the pieces, everything from wall hangings, shawls, to jackets and handbags, I had the honour of talking to Cecile Falvey, a weaving guru. Her great sense of humour was a delight to encounter as we discussed her pieces and how they came to be. Everything has a story like the bed spread (seen below right). These fabrics are snippets of bigger projects that she had quilted together. She also explained about the church who asked her to make a cover for a coffin. The artist even accommodates for the young children who "get really bored at these things" by embedding squeaky toys in a magnificent wall hanging. The kids are invited to squish the lumps only to discover the noisy entertainment!
Held in Brisbane at St. Patrick's Hall, 58 Morgan Street, Fortitude Valley. It's a must see for weavers and fibre people.
